Summer Superfood: Green Gram Laddus Help Boost Strength and Keep the Body Cool

Traditional Indian recipes continue to hold a special place in daily diets, not only for their taste but also for their health benefits. One such nutritious preparation is green gram (moong) laddus, which are especially beneficial during the summer season due to their natural cooling properties.

Green gram is rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, B-complex, and K, along with minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, and selenium. These nutrients contribute to overall health, making moong an excellent dietary choice. When combined with makhana (fox nuts) and mishri or jaggery, these laddus become both nourishing and cooling.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200 grams) whole green gram (moong)
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons desi ghee
  • 50–60 grams makhana (fox nuts)
  • 12–15 cashews (chopped)
  • 8–10 almonds (optional)
  • 4–5 cardamom pods (crushed or powdered)
  • Mishri powder or jaggery powder as per taste

Method

First, wash the green gram thoroughly and dry it completely using a cloth. Allow it to air dry for some time.

Next, roast the moong in a heavy-bottomed pan on low heat for about 6 to 7 minutes, stirring continuously to ensure it does not burn. Once roasted, let it cool and grind it into a coarse flour with a semolina-like texture.

Heat ghee in a pan and add the moong flour. Roast it again on low flame until it releases a pleasant aroma and changes slightly in color. Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool.

In a separate pan, roast the makhana and grind it into a powder. Lightly fry the chopped cashews and almonds in a small amount of ghee.

Once the moong mixture has cooled, add mishri or jaggery powder, makhana powder, roasted dry fruits, and cardamom. Mix everything well.

Finally, shape the mixture into laddus while it is still slightly warm.

Health Benefits

These laddus help maintain energy levels, support digestion, and keep the body cool during hot weather. They are also a healthier alternative to processed sweets due to their natural ingredients.
