As winter conditions tighten their grip across several parts of the country, the national weather agency has issued an extended alert for cold waves and dense fog expected to impact multiple regions between December 10 and December 12. According to the latest bulletin, temperatures are likely to dip sharply in many areas, accompanied by reduced visibility during morning hours.
Cold Wave Expected in Central, Interior and Northern Plains
The weather department has indicated that between December 10 and 12, a strong cold wave pattern will influence the central-eastern belt and the northern parts of the peninsular region. The effects are expected to intensify gradually, bringing lower-than-normal night temperatures and chilly winds.
Additionally, northwestern parts adjoining the western region are likely to experience a cold wave from December 10 onward, with conditions extending until December 12. The drop in temperature is attributed to the dry cold winds blowing from the north and the influence of a passing western disturbance in the upper atmospheric layers.
Minimum Temperature to Fall by 2°C Over the Next Three Days
According to the weather agency, the northwestern plains may witness a decline of nearly 2°C in night temperatures during the next three days. Following this spell, temperatures may rise gradually by 2°C to 4°C over the subsequent four days.
A similar trend is expected in regions located across central India, where temperatures may remain unchanged for now but could fall by 2°C to 3°C in certain parts, especially those closer to the western interior zones. Later, a slight warming trend is expected from December 13 onward.
Effect of Western Disturbance on Eastern and Central Highlands
The impact of a western disturbance may also be felt across the eastern highland belt, where temperatures are predicted to drop by 2°C to 3°C over the next three days. Cold winds moving from the northern region may strengthen the chill during early morning and late evening hours.
The weather office has warned that parts of the eastern plateau and surrounding areas could witness noticeable cold conditions, with residents advised to avoid early morning exposure and ensure adequate heating arrangements at night.
Day Temperatures Slightly Above Normal in Western Interior Region
Interestingly, despite the intensifying cold wave during nighttime, many areas in the western interior region are still recording daytime temperatures 1°C to 2°C above normal. As per the regional weather centre, this anomaly may continue for some days, though a slight dip in minimum temperature is expected soon.
Cloudy conditions may develop from December 12 onward due to a new, weak western disturbance, though no significant rainfall is expected.
Snowfall and Light Rain Likely in Himalayan Zones from December 13
The weather department has projected that from December 13, several locations in the higher Himalayan belt may receive light snowfall or isolated rain. Until then, the weather is expected to remain mainly dry, with clear skies and cold nights.
Dense Fog Alert for Multiple Regions Till December 14
Morning visibility is likely to be significantly impacted in the following zones:
-
Himalayan foothills – Dense fog expected on December 10
-
Eastern coastal belt – Fog likely on December 10 and 11
-
Eastern plains – Fog expected from December 10 to 13
-
Northeastern region – Dense fog possible between December 10 and 14
Travellers have been advised to exercise caution during early morning hours, especially along major highways.
Cold Wave Warning: Regions Likely to Be Affected
Cold wave conditions may prevail in:
-
Parts of the northwestern plains
-
Regions in the central interior belt
-
Eastern plateau zone
-
Northern peninsular interior
-
South-central plateau region
Isolated areas in the central eastern zone may also witness intense cold on December 10, while northern interior regions of the peninsula and adjoining plateau stretches may experience cold wave conditions on December 11 and 12.
Conclusion
With temperatures continuing to dip and weather conditions fluctuating, the next few days are crucial for residents across multiple regions. The combination of cold winds, fog, and temperature drop may impact daily life, travel plans, and visibility. The weather department has urged people to stay updated with local advisories, avoid unnecessary early-morning travel, and take precautions to stay warm.
