During winter, many people start coughing more—especially early in the morning or late at night. Most assume it’s simply due to cold weather, but doctors say a persistent morning cough can also signal deeper health issues. With pollution levels rising across the country—AQI touching 400+ in cities like Delhi-NCR—respiratory problems tend to worsen during this season.
So what exactly does a winter-morning cough reveal?
What experts say
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Professor at the Department of Medicine, GTB Hospital (Delhi), explains that a frequent cough in winter may indicate hidden conditions such as:
• Bronchitis
• Acid reflux (GERD)
• Asthma
• Airway irritation caused by pollution
According to him, not every winter cough is “just a cold”—persistent symptoms require medical evaluation. If the cough lasts more than two weeks, lung-related tests are strongly recommended.
Why does a morning cough happen?
Coughing is actually a protective reflex. The body coughs to clear:
• Phlegm
• Dust and pollution particles
• Viruses and bacteria
• Allergens (like pet hair, pollen)
Reasons that commonly trigger winter cough:
• Pollution and smog irritating the airways
• Cold wind and sudden temperature change
• Viral or bacterial infections
• Allergies
• Smoking and exposure to smoke
• Acid reflux (often worse at night)
• Asthma, which flares up in the early morning
Types of cough and what they mean
• Dry cough – often viral infection or allergy
• Wet/phlegmy cough – may indicate a bacterial infection
• Night-time or early-morning cough – common in asthma and acidity
• Long-lasting cough (>2 weeks) – needs medical tests
