Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of Bangladesh's 2024 student movement, died on Thursday while undergoing treatment at a Singapore hospital. Hadi's death comes just days after he was shot in the head. Hadi's death has sparked renewed violence in Bangladesh, worsening the situation in several cities.

Sharif Osman Hadi was shot by unknown assailants on December 12 in Dhaka while he was traveling in a battery-operated auto-rickshaw on Culvert Road in the Paltan area. He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital. From there, he was flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on Thursday.

According to an official statement issued by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sharif Osman Hadi died from injuries sustained in the assassination attempt. The process of repatriating Hadi's body from Singapore to Dhaka is currently underway.

Who was Usmad Hadi?

Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent leader of the July 2024 uprising in Bangladesh and a spokesperson for the anti-Hasina group, the Inquilab Manch. The Inquilab Manch came to prominence during the July 2024 uprising in Bangladesh, which ultimately led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina from power.

Sharif Osman Hadi was a candidate in the upcoming elections to be held in February and was campaigning as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency at the time of the attack.

What did Muhammad Yunus say?

Addressing the nation, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said, "Today I bring you very sad news. Sharif Osman Hadi, a fearless front-line fighter of the July uprising and spokesman for the Inquilab Manch, is no longer with us." Yunus declared a day of state mourning and promised to apprehend and take action against the suspect in the shooting.

Muhammad Yunus further said, "I humbly appeal to all citizens to maintain patience and restraint. Hadi was the enemy of defeated forces and fascist terrorists," a dig at the now-disbanded Awami League of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
