Why did Arjuna, Bhima, and Draupadi fall midway? Why was only Yudhishthira able to reach heaven?

After the Mahabharata war ended and years of righteous rule over Hastinapur, the Pandavas and Draupadi decided to renounce worldly life and embarked on the "Mahaprayana" (journey through the Himalayas to heaven). However, only Yudhishthira physically reached the gates of heaven on this divine journey.

Draupadi and the remaining four Pandavas fell one by one along the way. When Bhima asked Yudhishthira why, Yudhishthira replied that the reason behind each one's downfall was their ego and subtle flaws:

1. Draupadi (fault of partiality):
Draupadi was the first to fall on the journey. Yudhishthira explained that Draupadi was the wife of all five Pandavas and her duty was to love them all equally, but she had a slight bias (favoritism) toward Arjuna. Because of this partial bias, she was unable to reach heaven.

2. Sahadeva (Arrogance of His Intelligence):
After Draupadi, Sahadeva, the youngest Pandava, fell. Sahadeva was a highly learned man, an astrologer, and a seer. According to Yudhishthira, Sahadeva was so arrogant about his intelligence and wisdom that he believed no one else in the world was as knowledgeable as him.

3. Nakula (pride in his beauty):
This marked the downfall of Nakula. Nakula was extremely handsome and attractive. He was extremely proud of his looks and beauty. He believed that no one in the entire world was more beautiful than him.

4. Arjuna (Pride of Valor and Strength):
After Nakula, the great archer Arjuna fell by the wayside. Arjuna was proud of his archery and valor. Before the battle, he had boasted that he would destroy all the enemies in a single day, but he failed to do so. This pride in his strength led to his downfall.

5. Bhima (Pride of Strength and Excessive Hunger):
Ultimately, the mighty Bhima fell. There were two main reasons for Bhima's downfall: First, he was proud of his immense physical strength and often underestimated the strength of others. Second, he was unable to control his food (hunger) and ate more than he needed.

Why did only Yudhishthira reach heaven?
Yudhishthira was impartial, truthful, and followed the path of righteousness throughout his life. He harbored no pride in his knowledge or strength, nor did he commit injustice against anyone. He even took a dog (actually a manifestation of Dharmaraja) with him throughout the journey and refused to leave it behind and go to heaven alone. It was because of this selfless righteousness and selfless spirit that he was able to enter heaven in his physical form.
