To curb cybercrime and online fraud, the central government is preparing to introduce "SIM binding" rules. These rules could come into effect on January 1, 2027, with companies given a deadline of December 31, 2026. These new rules will significantly change the use of messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
What is the SIM binding rule?
Currently, many people start WhatsApp or other messaging apps by entering their mobile number and verifying the OTP once, then remove the SIM card from the phone and use it in another phone. However, once the SIM binding rule is implemented, apps will have to remain permanently linked to the active SIM card associated with the account. If the SIM card for the number is not in the phone or is not active, the app may have trouble running.
What will change on WhatsApp Web?
Not only the mobile app, but also the desktop version of WhatsApp Web, which runs on computers or laptops, is also facing stricter regulations. According to the Department of Telecom's directives, a web session cannot be run continuously for more than six hours, and after that, the balance must be linked again by scanning a QR code. This will make it difficult to misuse the account from another location.
Why is the government bringing this rule?
Cybercriminals often create accounts for messaging apps using fake numbers from other countries or Indian mobile numbers and then remove the SIM from the phone. They then use the same accounts to stage digital arrests, threaten people by posing as fake government officials, or defraud people in the name of investments. The government is implementing this rule to control such crimes and ensure the authenticity of the numbers.
This rule will not affect users traveling abroad, as their SIM card remains active in their phone. Implementation of this rule will help users enjoy a secure and transparent digital environment.
