Winter Laddu Recipe: This winter seed is even more powerful than sesame—make these laddus and keep the cold away

Winter increases the body’s need for energy, warmth and immunity. That’s why traditional winter foods focus on ingredients that are nourishing, heat-generating and strengthening. For generations, grandmothers have recommended laddus during cold weather—whether made from sesame, millet or edible gum—to protect the body from cold and fatigue.

But there is one winter seed that is considered even more powerful than sesame. It is easy to use, highly nutritious and perfect for making laddus that keep the body warm from within.

This article shares a simple recipe for laddus made from this winter superfood and explains why they are so beneficial.

This winter seed is more powerful than sesame

The seed we are talking about is flaxseed (alsi). Though small in size, flaxseeds are packed with nutrition and have a strong warming effect, making them ideal for winter consumption.

Flaxseeds are rich in:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids

  • Fiber and plant protein

  • Calcium, magnesium and iron

  • Antioxidants

Because of this nutritional profile, flaxseeds are often referred to as a plant-based multivitamin. Laddus made from flaxseeds combine taste with powerful health benefits.

Easy flaxseed laddu recipe

Ingredients

  • Flaxseeds – 1 cup

  • Jaggery (grated) – ¾ cup

  • Desi ghee – 2 to 3 tablespoons

  • Dry coconut (grated) – ½ cup

  • Cashews and almonds (chopped) – 2 tablespoons

  • Cardamom powder – ½ teaspoon

  • Edible gum – 1 tablespoon (optional)

Method
Dry roast the flaxseeds on low flame until they start crackling and release a nutty aroma. Let them cool and grind them coarsely.

Heat ghee in a pan. Add the edible gum and let it puff up. Remove it, crush it lightly and keep aside. In the same ghee, lightly roast the dry coconut and chopped nuts.

Add jaggery and melt it on low heat, stirring continuously. Once melted, switch off the flame and add the ground flaxseeds, roasted gum and cardamom powder. Mix everything well.

While the mixture is still warm, grease your hands with a little ghee and shape it into laddus.
