Diabetes is spreading rapidly not only in the world but also in India. Like an epidemic, diabetes is making every second person its victim. In the year 2022, around 828 million (82 crore) adults were diagnosed with diabetes. Surprisingly, one-fourth of this huge figure i.e. 212 million (21.2 crore) are Indians. There are many myths in the minds of people regarding the rapidly increasing diabetes, which can help in the spread of the disease. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, let us know about the common myths and facts related to diabetes.
Myth: Diabetic patients need special food.
Fact: If you have diabetes, you can control your blood sugar levels by eating home-cooked meals. You just need to make healthy dietary choices. Therefore, avoid the fancy commercially available diabetes foods and opt for foods low in fat and sugar.
Myth: Fruits contain sugar, hence diabetic patients should not consume them.
Fact: People often have the misconception that diabetics should avoid fruits, but this is not true. Fruits contain natural sugars, which are lower in sugar than cakes, biscuits, and sweets. Fruits also contain fiber and other nutrients. You can consume fruits after consulting your doctor.
Myth: Eating too much sugar causes type 1 diabetes.
Fact: This is completely false. Type 1 diabetes is not caused by diet or lifestyle. Type 1 diabetes occurs when insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system. It has no connection to diet.
Myth: Type 2 diabetes patients can never touch sweet things.
Fact: People often think that if they have diabetes, they can't eat sweets of any kind. This is wrong. Even with diabetes, you can still include sweets in your life, but in moderation. Products containing natural sugars should be used. Eating sweets can raise blood sugar levels. If your diabetes is generally under control, you can occasionally indulge in sweets, but be sure to consult your doctor.
Myth: Diabetes can be completely cured.
Fact: Many people are under the misconception that diabetes is completely curable, but this is not true. The symptoms of diabetes can be managed, but it is not possible to eradicate the disease completely.
