From Aspiring Priest to One of the World's Most Fearsome Bowlers
Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas has delivered several unforgettable performances throughout his career. One such moment came in 2001 when he made history by taking 8 wickets in just 8 overs against Zimbabwe in an ODI match.
Cricket’s Elite Bowlers
Cricket has seen its fair share of legendary bowlers over the years. From Malcolm Marshall of the West Indies, Dennis Lillee of Australia, to Pakistan's Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, England’s James Anderson, and South Africa’s Dale Steyn, all of them have tormented batsmen worldwide with their fiery pace and pinpoint accuracy.
Sri Lankan bowlers too have carved a niche for themselves in the list of world-class bowlers. While the team boasted one of the greatest spinners of all time, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka's success wasn't solely due to him. Fast bowlers like Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga played crucial roles in numerous victories for the island nation.
The Bowler Who Almost Became a Priest
One of Sri Lanka’s finest bowlers had aspirations of becoming a priest but ended up as one of the world’s most dangerous bowlers, terrorizing batsmen across the globe. Chaminda Vaas etched his name among cricket's all-time greats, and his bowling prowess struck fear in the hearts of many.
Vaas remains one of the top fast bowlers in cricket history, having taken a total of 761 wickets across all formats—400 wickets in ODIs, 355 in Test matches, and 6 wickets in T20 internationals. His records are a testament to his incredible skill and impact on the game.
A Memorable Record-Breaking Spell
Chaminda Vaas produced one of the most iconic performances in 2001 against Zimbabwe. In a stunning display of bowling, he dismantled the Zimbabwean batting lineup, bowling them out for just 38 runs. This devastating spell included 8 wickets in 8 overs, with Vaas conceding only 19 runs, including 3 maiden overs.
During this spell, he became a nightmare for the Zimbabwean batsmen, and the team couldn’t even reach 40 runs, being dismissed in just 15.4 overs. Apart from Stuart Carlisle who scored 16 runs, none of the other batsmen could even reach double figures.
Sri Lanka easily chased the target in just 4.2 overs, with Vaas also claiming his first-ever hat-trick in the same match. He picked up consecutive wickets in the 10th over, dismissing Carlisle, Craig Wishart, and Tatenda Taibu.
Double Hat-tricks and World Cup Glory
Chaminda Vaas continued to deliver match-winning performances throughout his career. In addition to his hat-trick against Zimbabwe, he took another hat-trick during the 2003 World Cup against Bangladesh, showcasing his consistency and lethal ability with the ball.
The Journey from Priesthood to Bowling Glory
One of the most fascinating aspects of Vaas's life is that he once aspired to become a priest. He revealed this surprising detail in an interview, but destiny had other plans. Instead of pursuing the priesthood, Chaminda Vaas became one of Sri Lanka’s greatest fast bowlers, leaving an indelible mark on the cricketing world.
