Former Indian captain and coach Anil Kumble believes that Australia's World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins got a huge sum in the IPL auction for his leadership skills. Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Cummins for Rs 20.5 crore. Apart from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings also bid for Cummins, leading to a higher bid amount.
In IPL 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad spent Rs 20.5 crore to secure Pat Cummins, leaving many wondering about the reason behind this significant investment. Giving information about this matter, Anil Kumble said that this is really a huge amount. He expressed surprise at the bid of more than Rs 20 crore and said that he expected Cummins to get a higher price, but Rs 20 crore was unexpected. With this acquisition Cummins became the most expensive player in IPL history, surpassing Mitchell Starc, who was later bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore in the IPL auction.
He said, 'Sunrisers are probably looking for a captain and this could be the reason why they seem desperate to buy Cummins. Perhaps RCB was also looking for a captain for a long time. Best wishes to Pat Cummins. Three trophies, but this was the best thing of them all.
World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan acknowledged Cummins' recent success, saying the Australian captain has achieved remarkable success in the last two and a half years. Morgan said, 'The kind of bowler Pat Cummins is and the success he has had in the last one and a half years is fantastic. Apart from captaining the team that won the World Test Championship, as a bowler he helped England retain the Ashes. Then gave another ODI World Cup to the Australian team.
Morgan said, 'Cummins has received such a huge amount considering his recent form and confidence. This is also an issue of demand and supply. Some teams are looking for leadership roles not only as captains but also in the changing room. Therefore Pat Cummins completely justifies his price.
Currently, Sunrisers Hyderabad is led by Kane Williamson. However, they had a disappointing performance last season and finished 10th with four wins and ten losses from 14 matches.
