IPL 2025: Ruckus over this rule of RTM card, many teams complained to BCCI, and told about the loss
The governing council of the league recently issued new rules for the mega auction of IPL 2025. This time the Right to Match (RTM) card was back. However, some changes were made in its rules. Now there is a ruckus about one of these changes. Many teams are not happy with this change and have also expressed their concern by complaining to the BCCI. Actually, earlier teams used to use the RTM card by agreeing to match the highest bid on the player in the auction and include the player back in their team. But now after the use of this card, the team with the highest bid will be given another chance to increase the bid. Many teams have complained to the BCCI about this change.
Regarding the RTM card, the franchise has said that its purpose is to determine the market value of the player. However the BCCI has not put any cap on the last price increase of the team that makes the highest bid. This can lead to arbitrary bidding during the auction. If this happens, it will be meaningless. According to the report of Cricbuzz, many teams have officially complained to the BCCI in writing about this. At the same time, some franchises are discussing with the board officials.
It is also being said that due to this rule of BCCI, any franchise will prefer to use retention instead of an RTM card. Because BCCI had a target of attracting maximum star players for auction behind bringing this rule. On the other hand, Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore were fixed for players with number 4 and number 5 retention ranks. Due to this, franchises can choose the option of more retention instead of the option of RTM card. Due to this, star players will not be able to come in the auction.
In IPL 2025, franchises have been given the option to retain a maximum of 6 players. This will also include the Right to Match card. Franchisees can retain a maximum of five capped players (Indian/foreign) and a maximum of two uncapped players. The fewer players a franchise retains, the more Right to Match cards it will have, which it can use in the auction.
Under the new rule, if a player is being auctioned and a team has placed the highest bid of Rs 6 crore for him, then the player's current franchise will first be asked if they want to use their RTM. If they agree, the first team will be given another chance to increase the bid. If they now increase it to Rs 10 crore, then the player's current team can use their RTM card and re-sign him for Rs 10 crore. This will benefit the player but the current franchise will suffer a loss.
