The son left the country for which his father shed blood and sweat on the cricket field and wore the jersey of this team.
There have been many cricketers who have represented two countries in international cricket. But, this is the story of a father and son. Father David Richardson played cricket for South Africa and his son Michael Richardson plays cricket for Germany. Cricket is in the blood of the Richardson family. David Richardson's father, his real brothers, and his cousins have all been cricketers. It is a different matter that they all could not play international matches for South Africa like David Richardson. But, they played domestic cricket.
David Richardson played for South Africa, debuting against India.
Wicketkeeper-batsman David Richardson made his international debut in 1991 in an ODI match played against India at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. On his debut, Richardson scored 4 runs not out and made only 2 stumpings. The very next year, i.e. in April 1992, he made his Test debut against West Indies at Bridgetown. His debut in Test cricket was also not very special. He could score only 10 runs in two innings combined.
Played 42 Tests, and 122 ODIs in 8 years
David Richardson played cricket for South Africa for 8 years. During this time he played 42 Tests and 122 ODIs, in which his performance in front of the wicket may not have been that great but his performance behind the wicket was very good. David Richardson made a total of 152 catches including 150 catches and 2 stumpings in his Test career as a wicketkeeper. While in ODIs he made a total of 165 dismissals with 148 catches and 17 stumpings. Due to these figures, David Richardson's name is counted among the best wicketkeepers in South Africa.
Michael Richardson made his debut for Germany in 2019
But, the son of the player who was counted among the best wicketkeepers in the country, Michael Richardson, left South Africa and moved to Germany to play cricket. Michael Richardson made his T20 International debut for Germany in 2019. David Richardson's son played his first match for Germany against Denmark, which was the match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Region Final.
Like his father, the son is also a wicketkeeper-batsman.
Michael Richardson has the same role in the German team as his father David Richardson had in the South African team. Michael Richardson has played 25 T20 International matches for Germany so far in which he has scored 511 runs with 2 half-centuries in front of the wicket and has taken 25 wickets behind the wicket.
