Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh Phogat, who reached the final match of the 50 kg category, was found to be overweight than the standards set in the Olympics. In view of this, she has been disqualified. Vinesh Phogat's weight was found to be 2 kg more on Tuesday night. Her weight was 52 kg. According to Sports Star's report, Vinesh Phogat even cut her hair and nails to reduce her weight. She also got blood extracted but she still managed to reach only 50 kg, 150 grams and the country's hopes of a gold medal were dashed.
Now many people are wondering whether blood extraction can help in weight loss. If it helps in weight loss, then how much blood can be extracted for this and how much weight can be reduced by extracting so much blood. To know this, we have talked to experts.
Does getting blood drawn cause weight loss?
Professor Dr. Jugal Kishore, HOD in the Department of Community Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital, explains that blood extraction or blood donation can reduce weight, but it happens only for a few hours. For example, if blood is extracted and weight is measured immediately, then 300 to 400 grams of weight can be lost by extracting one unit of blood, but if blood is donated today and weight is measured tomorrow, then there will be no reduction in weight.
Dr. Kishore says that blood extraction can reduce weight for 6-12 hours. After this, if you measure the weight, it will be the same as before. Only one unit of blood is extracted from any person's body at a time. One unit contains about 350 milligrams of blood. In such a situation, even if someone extracts his blood to lose weight immediately, then at the most only 350 grams of weight will be reduced. But this too will last only for a few hours.
Why does getting blood drawn cause weight loss?
Dr. Kawaljit Singh, a senior physician in Delhi, explains that when you donate blood, calories are burned from the body. The body uses a lot of energy to make new blood and produce red blood cells. This burns calories and reduces weight, but it lasts only for a few hours. As soon as blood is formed again in the body, the weight becomes the same as before.
Dr. Kishore says that bleeding is not a good option for losing weight. Even if this has to be done, it should be done under the supervision of doctors. Blood extraction can have an effect on the body. There is also a risk of deteriorating health due to this.
Dr. Kishore explains that after removing blood, the person is given some liquid diet so that dehydration does not occur. But if someone does not drink water or juice, then dehydration can occur. This worsens the health.
