Has Telegram violated anything in India? IT Ministry sought information from the Home Ministry
Pavel Durov, the head of messaging service app Telegram, was arrested in Paris. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information Technology (IT) has sought information from the Ministry of Home Affairs on whether any violation has been done in India as well. Sources gave this information on Monday. And said that no immediate response was received to the email sent to the IT Ministry on this issue.
Telegram founder and CEO Durov was detained at Paris airport while serving an arrest warrant. Durov is accused of using his Telegram platform for crimes such as money laundering and drug trafficking. Police claim that criminal activities have been helped to flourish on the Telegram platform.
Are there any complaints about Telegram in India?
According to reports, Durov, who holds dual French and Russian citizenship, was detained at Paris-Le Bourget airport after landing in France from Azerbaijan on Saturday. Meanwhile, sources said that given the developments in France, the IT Ministry has asked the Home Ministry to investigate pending complaints against Telegram and look into possible action.
According to sources, the IT Ministry is not the investigating agency in such cases and the CERT-In formed under the ministry also focuses on cyber security crimes and not cyber crimes. Sources said, "The real question here is whether there is any complaint, whether there is a similar situation in India, and what is the situation, and what action is needed."
At the same time, when asked if Telegram, being a messaging app, can cite the haven provision, sources said that in that case, they will have to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, provide information when needed, and assist in any investigation.
