Robot: In today's time when artificial intelligence and robots are threatening to take over the world, humans are not ready to give up. Technology is constantly developing. With the help of technology, robots are doing many tasks like household chores, massage work etc. People fear that machines may soon start attacking them.
However, this will not be the first time a robot will threaten a human. According to a report by IFLScience, the first time a robot killed a human was 45 years ago in 1979. According to records, Robert Williams was the first person to be killed by a robot. This incident happened in America.
what happened
Williams, 25, worked at Ford Motor Company's casting plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. On the day of the incident, he was working with a parts-retrieval system that moved some material from one part of the factory to another, according to legal documents.
The machine was not working properly, so they suspected something had gone wrong. Williams climbed to the third floor of a shelving unit to investigate the fault, when a mechanical arm struck him from behind and crushed him. The robotic system reportedly considered Williams an inanimate object and therefore removed him from the storage unit.
Family got compensation
In 1983, his family sued Litton Industries, the machine's manufacturer, for the horrific accident. They argued that even though the mechanical arm was moved with a lot of force, adequate safety devices were not installed. They were awarded $10 million in compensation, which was increased to $15 million in 1984.
Robots killed 2 people in Japan and South Korea
Two years later, in 1981, a similar incident occurred in Japan when Kenji Urada, a 37-year-old worker at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries plant in Akashi, was killed by a mechanical arm while he was inspecting a malfunctioning robot.
Last year, a robot in South Korea crushed a man to death because it couldn't distinguish between him and a box of food, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported. The robotic arm mistook the man for a box of vegetables and grabbed him. It pushed him onto the conveyor belt where his face and chest were crushed by the machine.
