Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) issues e-passbook i.e. EPF Passbook to Provident Fund (PF) account holders. EPF passbook contains all the information related to the PF account including contributions, interest, withdrawal, etc.
Digital Passbook comes in handy to track PF balance, a contribution made by employers, and interest earned on their PF account. Additionally, the e-passbook can also be used as proof of PF contribution and balance details while applying for loans or other financial services.
Notably, the e-passbook facility for PF accounts is available only for those employees who have registered their UAN numbers with the EPFO portal. Let us take a look at how to register a UAN number on the EPFO portal and access the EPF passbook.
How to register UAN on the EPFO portal
Go to the official website of EPFO – epfindia.gov.in
Now click on 'For Employees' under the 'Our Services section.
Select the option "UAN Member e-Sewa" from the drop-down menu and click on "Sign In".
On the login page, click on "Activate UAN" located below the login form.
Enter your UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number, and captcha code in the required fields.
- Click on "Get Authorization PIN".
- You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter OTP and click on "Submit".
- Once the OTP is verified, you will be asked to create a password for your UAN account. Enter the password and click on "Submit".
- As soon as the process is complete, you will receive a confirmation message on your registered mobile number and email address.
- Once your UAN is activated, you can log in to your account using your UAN and password.
After the completion of registration of the UAN number on the EPFO portal, you will be able to download your EPF passbook after six hours of registration.
How to download epf passbook online
Go to EPFO Portal
Click on the "For Employees" option in the menu bar and select "Member Passbook".
Now enter your UAN (Universal Account Number) and Password.
Now you will be able to see your EPF account details.
Click on the "Download e-passbook" option to download your EPF passbook.
Select the financial year for which you want to download the e-passbook and enter the captcha code.
Click on "Download" to download your EPF passbook online.
You can also check your EPF passbook balance through SMS, missed calls, or the UMANG app.
How to check epf passbook balance through sms
To check the EPF passbook balance through SMS, make sure that you have registered your mobile number with the EPFO portal.
- From your registered mobile numberType and send an SMS to 7738299899.
The SMS facility is available in a total of 10 languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Punjabi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Gujarati. The last three characters in the SMS indicate your preferred language. For example, to get the information in English type ENG you have to type HIN for Hindi, PUN for Punjabi, GUJ for Gujarati, MAR for Marathi, KAN for Kannada, TEL for Telugu, TAM for Tamil, TAM for Malayalam For MAL and for Bengali BEN has to be sent.
- Wait for a while after sending the SMS. EPFO will reply with an SMS containing your last PF contribution, balance details, and available KYC information.
