Woman loses Rs 27 lakhs while trying to activate eSIM! WhatsApp call makes her bankrupt

Jyotsna Bhatia, a resident of Sector 82, works in a private company. A WhatsApp call resulted in a fraud of Rs 27 lakhs. The mistake was that the woman believed whatever the other person said.A 44-year-old woman recently fell victim to e-SIM fraud. She has suffered a loss of about Rs 27 lakh. Following the complaint, an FIR has been lodged at the Cyber ​​Crime Police Station, Sector 36, Noida. The police on Thursday (September 5) registered a case under Sections 318 (4) (cheating) and 319 (2) (personal fraud) of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act.

How did the scam happen?

Jyotsna Bhatia, a resident of Sector 82, works in a private company. She told the police that she received a WhatsApp call from an alleged customer service officer of a telecom company on August 31. The caller told her about the new features of e-SIM and said that she should activate the e-SIM if she loses her phone. 

Cyber ​​Crime Branch Station House Officer Vijay Kumar Gautam said, "The accused asked Bhatia to select the e-SIM feature in the SIM application and enter the code received on the message. As soon as he followed the accused's instruction, his mobile number got deactivated immediately." 

Bhatia was assured that a new SIM card would be delivered to him on September 1. The SHO said, “When he did not receive the SIM card on September 1, he called the customer care and was directed to visit the service centre for a duplicate SIM.”

27 lakh rupees flew away

According to the report, three days later Bhatia got a new SIM, but he received several messages from the bank. In the FIR, he alleged that 'the accused broke my fixed deposit, withdrew money from my two bank accounts, and extended a loan of ₹7.40 lakh in my name without my knowledge.'
