8th Pay Commission: How much arrears will central government employees receive after the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission?

The Eighth Pay Commission is going to be a significant one for central government employees and pensioners. Everyone is interested in knowing when the new Pay Commission's recommendations will be implemented, how much salary increases will occur, and how much arrears will be received. The government has not yet announced a final implementation date. However, since the commission's deadline is January 1, 2026, employees may receive arrears for previous months, as the recommendations will be implemented from that date.

What exactly is arrears?

If there is a delay in implementing the Pay Commission recommendations and they are implemented retrospectively, the difference between the old and revised salaries is paid to employees. This is called arrears.

How much can the arrears be?

According to a report by ClearTax, some employees are likely to receive arrears of ₹1 lakh or more due to the 12- to 18-month delay in implementing the Eighth Pay Commission. However, the amount is not yet finalized. It will depend on the employee's salary and applicable regulations.

How will arrears be calculated?
Arrears will be calculated based on the employee's salary, fitment factor, revised basic salary, and applicable allowances. The longer the implementation period, the higher the number of months' arrears.

What happened in the previous pay commissions?
The implementation of the Fifth Pay Commission was delayed by 19 months. Arrears were paid in two installments at that time. The Sixth Pay Commission was delayed by 32 months. Meanwhile, the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission were implemented from January 1, 2016, and arrears were deposited in the 2017 financial year.

When will the final decision be made?
The Eighth Pay Commission is required to submit its report within 18 months of its inception. However, the implementation of the new salary, the amount of arrears paid, and the date of deposit will only be clear after the final notification from the central government.
