Buying Onions from the Market? Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes to Save Money and Pick Fresh Ones

Onions are an essential ingredient in almost every Indian kitchen. Whether you are preparing everyday vegetables, curries or special dishes, fresh onions play an important role in enhancing flavour. However, many people unknowingly make mistakes while purchasing onions, often ending up with rotten, mouldy or poor-quality produce.

An onion may look perfectly fresh from the outside but could be damaged or spoiled internally. Knowing a few simple tricks can help you identify good-quality onions, avoid unnecessary wastage and store them properly for longer.

1. Never Ignore the Outer Skin

The first thing to check while buying onions is their outer skin. Fresh onions generally have dry, papery skin that comes off easily. Avoid onions that appear damp, unusually soft or have visible signs of mould.

Also, pick up the onion and gently press it. A fresh onion should feel firm and solid. If it feels unusually soft or mushy, it may have started rotting from the inside.

2. Check for Green Sprouts and Black Mould

Many people purchase sprouted onions because they are available at lower prices. However, green shoots indicate that the onion has started growing and its flavour and texture may have changed.

More importantly, avoid onions with black powder-like patches, visible mould or an unpleasant smell. Black mould can spread to neighbouring onions, especially when they are stored together in damp conditions.

3. Avoid Storing Onions in Plastic Bags

Buying fresh onions is only half the job; storing them correctly is equally important. A common mistake is keeping onions inside the same plastic bags in which they are purchased.

Plastic bags can trap moisture and restrict airflow, creating conditions that encourage spoilage. Instead, transfer onions to a mesh bag, open basket or another well-ventilated container.

Keep them in a cool, dry place with good air circulation.

4. Never Store Potatoes and Onions Together

Another common storage mistake is keeping potatoes and onions in the same basket or container.

Both vegetables have different storage requirements, and moisture, ventilation and gases released during storage can influence their shelf life. Keeping them together may encourage sprouting and spoilage under certain conditions.

The better approach is to store potatoes and onions separately in well-ventilated spaces.

5. Avoid Buying Onions with an Unusual Smell

Never ignore an onion that produces a strong, unpleasant or rotten smell. Fresh onions have their characteristic sharp smell, but a foul odour can indicate internal decay.

Also, avoid onions with leaking liquid, slimy patches or soft, discoloured areas. Even if the remaining onions in the bag look fresh, check them individually before purchasing.

How to Keep Onions Fresh for Longer

A few simple precautions can help prevent onions from spoiling quickly after purchase:

  • Store whole onions in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place.

  • Avoid direct sunlight and damp storage areas.

  • Keep onions away from potatoes.

  • Do not wash onions before storing them.

  • Check your onion stock regularly and remove any rotten or mouldy onions.

  • Store cut or peeled onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use them promptly.

Choosing fresh onions does not require any special expertise. Simply check their firmness, skin, smell and overall appearance before purchasing. These small precautions can help reduce food wastage, save money and ensure that your kitchen always has good-quality onions.
