Blood pressure is the most important indicator of heart health. Millions of people worldwide suffer from high blood pressure. In particular, the disease often doesn't show any significant symptoms early on, which is why it's called the "silent killer." If left untreated, the heart can gradually weaken, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, or kidney damage.
However, the good news is that blood pressure can be easily controlled with proper care, regular checkups, and lifestyle changes. Regular home blood pressure measurement is essential. However, many people measure it incorrectly, which can lead to inaccurate readings.
Our heart pumps blood throughout the body. As this blood flows through the blood vessels, the pressure exerted on them is called blood pressure. Actually, blood pressure has two numbers. The top number is systolic pressure—the pressure when the heart contracts and pumps blood—and the bottom number is diastolic pressure—the pressure when the heart is at rest.
Why is it important to measure blood pressure correctly?
According to doctors, accurate blood pressure readings are essential for proper treatment. Incorrect measurement methods can lead to inaccurate readings. This can confuse patients and lead to incorrect treatment. Even when treatment is needed, it may go unnoticed.
Which machine should you use?
The digital arm-cuff machine, which is applied to the upper arm, is considered the most reliable.
The cuff should be applied directly to the skin, approximately one to two inches above the elbow. The cuff should not be loose, but it should not be too tight either.
What precautions should be taken before measuring blood pressure?
Avoid drinking tea, coffee, or caffeinated beverages for at least 30 minutes before measuring blood pressure.
Do not exercise before measurement.
Do not hold urine.
Before measuring blood pressure, sit quietly and relax your body for 5 to 10 minutes.
How should you sit when measuring blood pressure?
Sit straight on the chair.
The back should get full support from the chair.
Both feet should be straight on the ground.
Do not cross your legs or let them hang in the air.
Place your hands on a table or any straight surface.
The palm of your hand should be facing upwards.
Do not move or talk while counting.
What can be done to control blood pressure?
Reduce salt in your diet.
Avoid processed foods with high salt content.
Keep your weight under control by doing regular exercise.
Drink less alcohol.
If you smoke, quit completely.
Get enough sleep every day.
Make it a habit to walk briskly for at least 30 minutes every day.
