The Gujarat government has set a target of covering one lakh animals in 2026-27. Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Animal Husbandry Minister Jitu Vaghani informed that this scheme is being implemented under the 'National Livestock Mission' of the Central Government.

How much money will the government give for insurance cover?

Under this scheme , the government will provide insurance premium assistance of ₹1,300 per animal. This means that livestock owners can receive insurance coverage of up to ₹40,000 by paying just ₹229. "The aim of this scheme is to protect livestock families from the financial loss caused by the sudden death of their animals," Vaghani said.

How many animals can a family insure?

Each family will be allowed to insure a maximum of 10 large or 100 small animals. Large animals include cows, buffaloes, horses, donkeys, camels, bulls, calves, and male buffaloes. The central government has approved an allocation of ₹25 million (25 million rupees) for Gujarat under this scheme, of which ₹11.5 million (11.5 million rupees) has already been released.

The state has approved Rs 5.5 million for its own separate livestock insurance scheme. So far, livestock owners have applied for insurance for 87,147 animals. Vaghani said, "The Animal Husbandry Department is making arrangements to enroll all eligible applicants in the insurance scheme."
