Actually very few people know that there is a feature available on IRCTC website, with the help of which you can find out which seats are vacant in a running train. In this way you do not have to run after the TTE for an empty seat. The name of this feature of IRCTC is Chart Vacancy. What is the Chart Vacancy feature?

  1. This is a feature provided by IRCTC that allows you to check the availability of vacant seats on a running train. Technically, it's an online, live train reservation chart , which can be viewed after the final chart is prepared.
  2. With this you can get live information about which berth or seat is vacant in which compartment of the train.
  3. In such a situation, if someone is travelling with a waiting ticket, he can find out where he can get an empty seat to sit.
  4. You can see the vacant seat on your mobile and go directly to the TTE and get it allotted in your name as per the rules.

How to find vacant seats in a moving train?

Finding available seats on a moving train is quite easy. To do this, you need to:

  1. First of all you have to go to the official site of IRCTC or open the Rail Connect app.
  2. Click on the Charts / Vacancy option on the home page which will take you directly to the Reservation Chart page.
  3. Now enter your train number, travel date and boarding station.
  4. Click on Get Train Chart. This will open a class-wise layout of the train.
  5. Now select your coach type from First AC, Second AC, Third AC, or Sleeper. You will be presented with a complete list of vacant seats, including the coach and seat number.

What to do if you find a vacant seat?

After you have found a seat using the steps above:

  1. First of all note down the vacant seat number and coach number.
  2. Find the TTE without delay.
  3. Inform the TTE about vacant seats. If necessary, check the chart online.
  4. Ask the TTE to allot the vacant seat in your name. It is worth noting that as per the railway rules, the TTE is authorized to allot the vacant seat on first come first serve basis.
  5. The TTE will exchange your waiting list ticket for a receipt and provide you with an updated ticket, as per the rules and fare difference. You can then travel on that seat.
