LPU Campus Rape Allegation Turns Out to Be a Rumour, SIT Finds No Evidence; Punjab Police to File Closure Report

The controversy surrounding the alleged rape incident at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab has taken a significant turn. Following a detailed investigation, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has reportedly found no evidence of rape or sexual assault on the university campus or inside the girls' hostel.

Punjab Police has submitted an affidavit before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, explaining the findings of its investigation into the protests and unrest that broke out on September 26. According to the police, the incident was triggered by an unverified rumour that spread among students.

SIT Questions More Than 50 People During Investigation

To establish what actually happened, the SIT questioned more than 50 people, including female students, security personnel and university administrative staff.

Investigators also examined CCTV footage and digital records from the university campus and girls' hostel. The footage from the day of the incident, as well as the preceding days, was reviewed as part of the investigation.

According to the police affidavit, the investigation did not uncover any direct or indirect evidence of rape or sexual assault.

How Did Protests Break Out on the LPU Campus?

Police stated that rumours about an alleged incident involving a female student in the hostel spread rapidly through social media and messaging platforms on September 26.

As the information circulated without verification, hundreds of students reportedly gathered on campus and began protesting against the university administration and police.

The situation escalated into a major disturbance, with students raising slogans and creating unrest across the campus.

Punjab Police Submits Affidavit Before High Court

The Punjab Police has informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court about the findings through a status report and affidavit.

Following the completion of the investigation, police are preparing to submit a closure report before the concerned lower court, stating that no criminal offence related to the alleged sexual assault has been established.

Police Investigating the Spread of False Information

Apart from examining the original allegation, police are also looking into how the rumour originated and identifying those allegedly responsible for spreading misleading information.

The investigation's findings have brought clarity to the allegations that triggered the campus protests. However, the final legal outcome will depend on the court's consideration of the closure report.
