Tata Motors appears to be working on a new-generation Nexon, and the upcoming compact SUV has once again been spotted testing on Indian roads. Multiple heavily camouflaged test vehicles were reportedly seen together, giving a glimpse of the significant changes Tata could be planning for its popular SUV.

The current-generation Nexon was originally introduced in 2017 and has received several updates over the years. However, its basic proportions and overall body shape have remained largely unchanged. With the next generation, Tata is expected to make more substantial changes to the SUV's dimensions, styling and structure.

New Nexon Could Get a More Upright, Boxy Design

According to a report by Rushlane, the next-generation Nexon could move towards a more upright and boxier design.

The roofline is expected to be flatter than before, while the rear section could become more vertical instead of the slightly coupe-inspired profile seen on the current model.

This change could have practical benefits too. A flatter roof and more upright rear could create additional headroom for rear passengers and improve the overall sense of space inside the cabin.

The side profile may continue to feature the Nexon's familiar SUV stance, including prominent wheel arches. However, the doors, window line and other body panels are expected to receive a new design.

Rear Profile Gets a Major Makeover

The rear section appears to be one of the biggest areas of change on the upcoming Nexon.

The test vehicle seems to feature higher-mounted tail lamps, while the tailgate looks considerably more upright than the current model. The rear windscreen also appears larger and is accompanied by a conventional rear wiper.

A roof-mounted spoiler can also be seen on the camouflaged test vehicle.

The more vertical tailgate and flatter roof could potentially create additional usable luggage space. Tata may also move away from the current model's relatively elaborate rear styling in favour of a cleaner and more straightforward design.

Fuel Filler Cap Moves Higher

Another interesting detail is the position of the fuel-filler cap.

On the current Nexon, the fuel-filler door sits noticeably below the door handle. On the new test vehicle, it appears to have been moved higher, almost aligning with the door handle.

While this may seem like a small change, it could indicate that Tata is making broader changes to the SUV's underlying structure and body packaging.

Interior Could Get a Major Update

Earlier test vehicles have also provided limited glimpses of the cabin. Some familiar elements, including the steering wheel, infotainment display and climate-control setup, have been spotted.

However, because the test cars were equipped with development and testing equipment, these components should not necessarily be considered the final production design.

The next-generation Nexon is expected to receive a more comprehensive interior makeover, potentially bringing a fresher dashboard layout and updated technology.

What About the Engines?

Tata is expected to continue offering petrol and diesel powertrains in some form. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines could continue with the next-generation model, although specifications and tuning may change.

A CNG variant could also remain part of the Nexon range.

The Nexon EV is also expected to receive a next-generation update, although it could follow a separate timeline.

Expected Launch in 2027

The new-generation Tata Nexon is currently expected to make its debut in 2027. Since the test vehicles are still heavily camouflaged, several production details remain unknown.

If Tata goes ahead with the expected changes, the new Nexon could offer a more upright design, improved cabin practicality, a redesigned rear profile and a significantly updated interior while retaining the SUV's familiar identity.
