India's electric car market is entering an exciting phase. EVs were once significantly more expensive than comparable petrol and diesel cars, but increasing demand, improved battery technology, local manufacturing and economies of scale are gradually helping automakers bring prices down.
As the market expands, major manufacturers are also preparing smaller and more affordable electric cars aimed at a wider range of buyers.
Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia are among the companies expected to strengthen their affordable EV offerings in India by 2027. Here are three upcoming electric cars that could make the segment more competitive.
1. Maruti Suzuki's Small Electric Hatchback
Maruti Suzuki is developing a compact electric hatchback that could make its global debut during FY 2026-27.
Recent sightings of the company's Vision e-Sky concept have provided clues about the design and overall proportions of the upcoming model. The production version is expected to be based on Maruti Suzuki's dedicated K-EV platform.
The electric hatchback is expected to be around 3.39 metres long, making it suitable for navigating crowded city streets and tight parking spaces.
It could feature a battery pack of approximately 29kWh and offer a claimed range of around 270km on a single charge.
If Maruti manages to price the model aggressively, it could become one of the company's most accessible electric cars and potentially attract buyers who currently find EVs too expensive.
2. Hyundai's Compact Electric SUV
Hyundai Motor India has confirmed plans to introduce a compact electric SUV by March 2027.
The upcoming model is expected to take design and technology inspiration from the Hyundai Inster EV, which is sold in international markets.
The Indian version could be offered with 42kWh and 49kWh battery options. With the larger battery, the vehicle could potentially deliver a driving range of more than 350km, depending on the final specifications and testing conditions.
Expected technology and safety features could include:
-
Touchscreen infotainment system
-
Digital instrument cluster
-
Connected-car technology
-
Over-the-air software updates
-
Multiple airbags
With its SUV-inspired design and compact dimensions, the upcoming Hyundai EV could appeal to buyers looking for an electric vehicle that combines city-friendly dimensions with a higher seating position.
3. Kia's Upcoming Compact Electric SUV
Kia is also preparing to expand its electrified vehicle lineup in India. The company has announced plans to introduce four new electrified models, including three hybrids and a compact electric SUV.
The upcoming Kia EV is expected to be developed and locally manufactured in India. Local production could help the company control costs and make the vehicle more competitive in the growing Indian EV market.
The SUV is expected to measure approximately 4.2 metres in length, placing it in the compact SUV category.
More details about its battery capacity, range, features and final pricing are expected to emerge closer to its launch.
Competition in the EV Market Could Intensify
The arrival of smaller electric cars from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia could significantly expand the choices available to Indian buyers.
Until now, consumers looking for affordable EVs have had relatively limited options compared with the number of petrol and diesel models available. More mainstream manufacturers entering the segment could change that.
Lower prices, locally manufactured components, improving charging infrastructure and better battery technology could gradually make electric cars more accessible to everyday buyers.
However, the final prices, battery specifications and real-world range of these upcoming models will determine how competitive they are when they arrive. If manufacturers manage to combine affordable pricing, practical range and useful features, India's EV market could become considerably more competitive by 2027.
