Let us tell you that on 22 April, there was a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed. Since then, tourism in the state has come to a standstill. In such a situation, with the start of Chenab Rail Bridge and Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train service, tourists can once again be seen in the valley.
Why is Chenab Railway Bridge special?
- The Chenab Rail Bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project.
- Permission to build this bridge was given in the year 2003. It took more than two decades for the bridge to be completed.
- This bridge has been the most difficult and biggest construction (engineering) challenge in any railway-related project in the history of the country.
- The bridge is 359 metres high from the Chenab river bed, 1,315 metres long and has 152 arches.
- This is the world's highest railway bridge. It is 35 meters higher than the famous Eiffel Tower of Paris and five times higher than the Qutub Minar.
- This 1.31 kilometer long bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1,486 crore.
- To make this, 2,86,60,000 kg of steel, which is used in temperatures ranging from 10°C to 40°C, has been used.
- The bridge is capable of withstanding an earthquake of magnitude 8 on the Richter scale and a high intensity explosion.
- This bridge can withstand winds up to 266 km/h.
- The structure of the bridge is such that even if one pillar breaks, trains will be able to pass slowly.
What were the challenges in building the Chenab Railway Bridge?
- The Chenab Railway Bridge is built in the Himalayan region, which made its construction extremely difficult.
- The bridge site was a very remote and inaccessible place, making it very difficult to transport materials and machinery there.
- The biggest challenge was to bring labourers and engineers here every day; people did not want to stay.
- Valley snowfall, icy winds and bad weather repeatedly hampered the construction work.
- The work was also hampered due to terrorist incidents and security aspects.
- Many years of research, planning and engineering went into building the bridge.
