WhatsApp spoiler messages are set to add a new layer of privacy to people's chats on the platform. The feature, which is currently in development and has been spotted in a recent beta build, will hide users' text messages behind a blurred or blocked layer, making them visible only when tapped.
WhatsApp Spoiler Messages: How They Work
To use this spoiler message feature, you simply need to type a message or paste it into the text bar. Then, long-press and select the text. Once the text is selected, you'll see options like Translate, Cut, Copy, and Select All. Besides these options, there will be three dots. After clicking the three dots, several options will pop up in a vertical list, along with the typing option, such as Share, Undo, Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, Monospace, Spoiler, and Manage Apps. Click the spoiler option and then simply send the message. If WhatsApp rolls out this feature in the coming days—which is reportedly still in testing—you'll notice that your message is sent behind a blur layer.
On the receiver's screen, the spoiler message is blurred by default until they tap the bubble to reveal the content. WABetaInfo reports that the feature may also support keyboard shortcuts that use double pipes, so typing ||text|| could automatically mark that part as a spoiler.
Spoiler messages for sensitive and group chats
Developers and testers say WhatsApp spoiler messages are meant to help users hide sensitive details, such as OTPs, phone numbers, or surprise information, from immediately appearing on the screen. The feature is also expected to work in group chats, allowing people to avoid broadcasting spoilers or private details to everyone at once, and each member can choose when to show the text.
Right now, spoiler formatting is limited to text only and is in development for both Android and iOS, with no confirmed date for a public rollout. Several reports suggest it's being tested in beta builds and may be expanded later, perhaps to cover media like photos or videos, though WhatsApp hasn't confirmed this yet.
