Aadhaar Update 2026: You Can Change Your Email for Free Until December, Know the New Rule

If your Aadhaar-linked email address is outdated or you have never added one, there is a useful update from UIDAI. The authority has temporarily waived the ₹75 fee for updating an email address through the official Aadhaar mobile application.

The facility is available from July 1 to December 31, 2026. This means Aadhaar holders can use the app to update their email address without paying the usual ₹75 charge.

What has changed?

UIDAI has introduced a mobile application that allows Aadhaar holders to access several Aadhaar-related services digitally.

As part of this initiative, the authority has decided to make email-address updates through the Aadhaar app free for six months, from July 1 to December 31, 2026.

This can be particularly useful for people whose old email address is no longer active or who want to add a current email address to their Aadhaar details.

What else can you do through the Aadhaar app?

The new Aadhaar app offers several services beyond email updates.

According to UIDAI, users can currently use the app for services including mobile-number and address updates, biometric lock and unlock, authentication-history checks, downloading e-Aadhaar, sharing a contact card, tracking update requests and using Aadhaar verifiable credentials.

The app is available for both Android and iPhone users.

Can you update your mobile number online?

UIDAI has also expanded digital Aadhaar services. The current Aadhaar app allows users to update their mobile number and address without necessarily visiting an Aadhaar centre, subject to the applicable process and authentication requirements.

However, UIDAI's FAQ pages still indicate that mobile-number updates can also be completed by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre.

What about changing your Aadhaar address?

Address updates can be completed online through the myAadhaar portal if you have a registered mobile number and valid proof of address.

After logging in, you can submit the required details and upload the supporting document. UIDAI says the document should be valid, in the Aadhaar holder's name and consistent with the address entered in the request.

Should you update your Aadhaar details?

UIDAI advises Aadhaar holders to keep their information and supporting documents updated. The authority recommends updating proof-of-identity and proof-of-address documents at least once every 10 years from the date Aadhaar was generated.

This can help ensure that Aadhaar-based authentication and services continue to work smoothly.

Don't pay an agent unnecessarily

If you want to update your email address between July 1 and December 31, 2026, you can use the official Aadhaar mobile application and take advantage of the temporary fee waiver.

Be careful of websites or agents claiming that you must pay hundreds or thousands of rupees for this service. Always use UIDAI's official channels for Aadhaar updates.

The ₹75 email-update fee waiver is currently valid only until December 31, 2026, so eligible Aadhaar holders who need to update their email address can use the free facility during this period.
