AC Extended Warranty: Smart Investment or Just an Extra Cost?

Buying an air conditioner is already a significant expense, and the question of whether to invest in an extended warranty often creates confusion. The answer isn’t a simple yes or no—it depends on what you’re getting and how you plan to use your AC. If chosen wisely, an extended warranty can save you money and hassle, but if not, it can easily become an unnecessary expense.

When it comes to purchasing an extended warranty, you generally have two options: buying it directly from the brand or opting for plans offered by retailers like Croma, Reliance Digital, or Vijay Sales. While retail stores often bundle attractive deals, their service networks handle multiple brands, which can lead to delays—especially during peak summer when service requests surge. On the other hand, company-provided warranties are usually more streamlined since the brand services only its own products, often resulting in faster response times.

The real “game” lies in understanding what the warranty actually covers. A good extended warranty should include major components like the PCB and condenser coil, both of which are expensive to repair or replace. Regular servicing—ideally two to three times a year—and gas refilling are also important inclusions. If gas charging is excluded, the overall value of the warranty drops significantly, since this is a common maintenance cost in AC usage.

So, is it worth it? If the extended warranty offers comprehensive coverage, includes servicing and gas refills, and comes from a provider with reliable service support, it can definitely be value for money. However, if it only covers limited parts or excludes common issues, then it’s likely not worth the extra cost.

In short, don’t buy an extended warranty blindly. Read the fine print, compare options, and choose based on coverage and service quality—not just price.
