A major aviation tragedy struck Ahmedabad as an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating flight AI-171 bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 cabin crew, burst into smoke moments after lifting off the runway.
What Happened?
Initial reports suggest the aircraft's rear section struck a boundary wall during takeoff, leading to the crash. Within seconds, a large plume of smoke engulfed the crash site, spreading panic in the areas surrounding the airport.
The pilot issued a MAYDAY call to air traffic control (ATC) immediately after takeoff, indicating a serious emergency. However, contact with the aircraft was lost soon afterward. The plane came down near the airport perimeter, triggering a full-scale emergency response.
Uncertainty Over Passenger Safety
As of now, no official confirmation has been made regarding the condition of the 242 people on board. Rescue and medical operations are ongoing, and authorities have assured that updates will be provided soon. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency teams have been deployed for rescue and recovery.
Official Response and Rescue Efforts
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed hospitals to prioritize treatment for survivors and has ordered the creation of a green corridor to ensure swift transport of the injured. He confirmed that the NDRF and central agencies are handling the rescue operation and closely monitoring the situation.
