What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive condition in which stomach acid repeatedly flows back up into the esophagus. This can cause heartburn, sour mouth water, sour belching, and throat irritation after eating. GERD occurs when the valve between the stomach and esophagus doesn't close properly, allowing acid to flow upward. Your diet plays a crucial role in this situation. Some foods can loosen this valve or increase acid production, worsening reflux. Other foods can soothe it, making proper dietary choices crucial for those who frequently experience acidity.
