Team India's squad for the 2026 Asian Games has undergone a major change. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering an injury during the ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan.
The BCCI has named young Uttar Pradesh spinner Vipraj Nigam as Chakravarthy's replacement. The right-arm wrist-spinner is also known for his ability to contribute with the bat.
Varun Chakravarthy Injured After His Comeback
Chakravarthy had already spent considerable time recovering from an injury suffered during India's England tour. His injury had ruled him out of the T20I series against Zimbabwe.
After spending nearly two months at the National Cricket Academy's Centre of Excellence, Chakravarthy returned to competitive cricket against Afghanistan.
However, his comeback lasted only one match. After bowling his four-over spell, he reportedly experienced a muscle injury and was subsequently sent back to the Centre of Excellence for assessment.
As a result, he has now been ruled out of both the remainder of the Afghanistan T20I series and the Asian Games.
Why Was Vipraj Nigam Selected?
Vipraj Nigam has earned his place in the squad on the back of consistent performances across domestic and representative cricket.
The young spinner was recently part of the India A setup and impressed during the team's tour of Sri Lanka. He has also made an impact in the UP T20 League.
Nigam has additionally attracted attention through his performances in the IPL, where he has contributed with both his leg-spin and batting.
His ability to make an impact in both departments has helped him secure a place in India's Asian Games squad.
Krunal Pandya Misses Out Again
Krunal Pandya was also reportedly among the players being considered for the vacant spot following Chakravarthy's injury.
However, the selectors opted for Nigam instead, meaning Pandya will not be part of India's Asian Games squad.
India’s Asian Games Squad
Following the change, India's 13-member squad for the 2026 Asian Games is:

A New Opportunity for Vipraj Nigam
Chakravarthy's injury has opened the door for Nigam to make his mark on the international stage.
With his wrist-spin and useful batting ability, Nigam brings an additional all-round option to India's squad. The Asian Games could therefore provide the young cricketer with an important opportunity to showcase his skills at a major multi-sport event.
