Asked about India's national language, Kanimozhi's unique answer wins hearts in Spain

During an official visit to Spain, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, who is leading an all-party Indian delegation, gave a heartwarming response to a question about India's national language. When asked by a member of the Indian diaspora in Madrid, she replied, "India's national language is unity in diversity." Her answer received appreciation and reflected the inclusive spirit of the country.

The visit is part of India’s international outreach following Operation Sindoor, with Indian leaders engaging with global communities to present the nation’s stand against terrorism and promote cultural diplomacy.

Kanimozhi emphasized that the message her delegation wants to deliver to the world is one of harmony and diversity, stating that this ethos is what defines the Indian identity.

The question came in the backdrop of ongoing debates back home over the three-language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The DMK has been vocal in its opposition to what it sees as attempts to impose Hindi, making the MP’s answer particularly significant in an international context.

Addressing questions about terrorism, Kanimozhi said that while there are many challenges in the country, India is committed to peace and security. “Terrorism and war are unfortunate and unnecessary. India is a safe country, and we will ensure that even Kashmir remains secure,” she said.

She asserted that no matter what challenges lie ahead, the resolve of the Indian people will not waver. “They can try to mislead or derail us, but we are clear in our commitment to keep India, including Kashmir, a safe place,” she added.

The delegation’s Spain visit marks the final leg of a five-nation tour. Alongside Kanimozhi, the team includes MPs from various parties—Rajeev Kumar Rai (Samajwadi Party), Brijesh Chauta (BJP), Ashok Mittal (AAP), Prem Chand Gupta (RJD)—and former diplomat Manjeev Singh Puri.
