Ayurvedic Tips: Due to changing lifestyles, lack of physical activity, prolonged fasting, and the consumption of outside and junk food, most people today are struggling with gas and acidity. Therefore, it's crucial to recognize the symptoms and find relief through home remedies. Learn about the symptoms and treatment of gas and acidity from Prof. Mahesh Vyas (PhD), Dean of the All India Institute of Ayurveda, Delhi.

Common symptoms of gas

  • Feeling of fullness, feeling of tightness and tension in the stomach.
  • Abdominal pain – cramping or discomfort in the abdominal area.
  • Belching – passing gas through belching.
  • Flatulence – frequent passing of gas from the body.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Nausea – feeling of discomfort in the stomach.
  • Flatulence – Appearance of swelling or distension in the abdomen.
  • Heartburn – Burning sensation in the chest due to accumulation of gas.
  • Constipation – difficulty or irregularity in bowel movements.
  • Frequent flatulence- excessive release of gas.

Symptoms of acidity

Burning sensation in the stomach or chest, sour water in the mouth, sour belching, nausea, sour vomiting, mouth ulcers, sourness in the teeth, headache, stomach ache etc. are the symptoms of acidity.

Keep these things in mind

  • Avoiding all raw, cold, dry, and rough foods. These include raw vegetables, cold juices and smoothies, salads, crackers, dry cereal or granola (especially with cold milk), popcorn, dry toast, frozen foods, cold foods, and ice or cold beverages.
  • Eat mostly hot and well cooked food.
  • Use hot spices (ginger, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon) in food.
  • Use healthy oil in appropriate quantity.
  • Keep sipping warm water in between meals.
  • Limit heavy, hard-to-digest proteins, such as meat and most legumes. Eating lean meats (chicken and fish) and legumes (soaked mung beans and red lentils) is recommended.
  • Avoid processed, preserved, and refined foods. However, eating basmati rice is good.
  • In case of indigestion, consume khichdi or porridge.
  • Walk a hundred steps after eating.
  • Use oil enema.
  • Consume buttermilk regularly.
  • Drink celery or fennel water before eating.
  • Mix cumin powder or coriander powder in curd and consume it in between meals.
  • Once you have eaten, eat something only after three to four hours.
  • Do not eat while driving or walking.
  • Consume lemon and ginger before eating.
  • Use fennel or celery powder between meals.
  • There should be adequate amount of fiber in the food.
  • Do yoga and pranayam regularly.
  • Asanas for yoga- Do Bhujangasana, Paschimottanasana, Vajrasana, Mandukasana, Shashankasana, Surya Namaskar, Vrikshasana etc.

Home and Ayurvedic treatment

If you are suffering from gas and acidity, then you can get relief from this problem with these home remedies.

  • Take a teaspoon of Triphala powder with warm water before bed. This helps clear the stomach and makes the body feel light.
  • Add a pinch of asafoetida to your food or dissolve a small amount of asafoetida in warm water and consume it for instant relief.
  • Apply asafoetida on the navel.
  • Chew a teaspoon of celery seeds with warm water after meals. You can also make a tea by boiling celery seeds in water.
  • Make ginger tea by boiling fresh ginger slices in water. Additionally, add grated ginger to your meals to improve digestion.
  • Consume water of dry ginger and motha.
  • Chew a spoonful of fennel after meals or make tea by soaking fennel seeds in hot water and drink it.
  • Boil a teaspoon of cumin seeds in water for a few minutes, then strain it and drink it lukewarm.
  • In case of gas, mix half a teaspoon of baking soda and water in lemon juice and drink it.
  • In case of stomach irritation, consume raisins, dates, liquorice, dry ginger and fennel with food.
  • Regular consumption of Amla provides relief from the problem of gas and acidity.
  • Eat pineapple.
  • Consume pumpkin juice regularly.
  • Consume lemon water or wood apple juice regularly.
