Government employees across the country are extremely excited about the Eighth Pay Commission. Everyone wants to know how much their salaries will increase after the new pay commission is implemented. However, cyber fraudsters are taking advantage of this excitement and creating a new trap. The Home Ministry's cybersecurity initiative, "Cyber Dost," has issued an alert regarding this new scam. Therefore, it is crucial for employees to remain vigilant and avoid any unknown links or files.
A new cyber fraud in the name of salary calculator
Recently, a new cyber scam has surfaced in the name of "salary calculator". In this scam, fraudsters target government employees and lure them with the promise of a salary hike. With the buzz surrounding the 8th Pay Commission, people are easily falling into this trap. Cyber criminals are sending messages on WhatsApp that employees can estimate their new salary by downloading a special file. This message is accompanied by an .APK file named "Salary Calculator" to make it appear trustworthy.
The phone gets hacked as soon as the APK file is installed.
As soon as a person downloads and installs this .APK file on their phone, fraudsters gain control of the mobile. This fake app can access personal information, bank details, and even OTPs from the phone. Money is then withdrawn from the bank account. Cyber agencies have clarified that the government never sends .APK files through WhatsApp or any other messaging platform. Downloading apps from any unknown or unverified source can be risky, as they may contain hidden malware.
