A powerful earthquake struck the South Atlantic Ocean at 9:58 am local time (GMT -3) on Friday morning, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale. The tremors were felt from Argentina to Chile. The epicenter of this earthquake was located in the sea about 104 kilometers (65 miles) from Chile. The depth of the earthquake could not be determined accurately, but in the initial estimate it is being considered a shallow (low depth) earthquake. Usually the impact of surface earthquakes is felt more intensely on the surface, and this is why the tremors of this earthquake were felt particularly strongly in the areas located near the epicenter.
Local residents have confirmed feeling tremors in homes and offices, although no major damage or loss of life has been reported so far. Immediately after the earthquake, the administration and emergency services became alert and surveillance has been increased in coastal areas. No tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake, but experts are keeping an eye on the activities of the sea. The Meteorological and Seismological Agency is constantly evaluating the aftershocks of the earthquake or any other potential danger.
This incident is a reminder that Chile and its surrounding areas are always in need of vigilance due to being a seismically sensitive area. Many people felt the shaking near the epicenter. Since this earthquake was relatively shallow, its intensity was felt more near the epicenter than a deep earthquake of the same magnitude. The depth of this earthquake could not be determined precisely, but it is believed to be shallow (shallow). The nearest large city where the earthquake may have been felt was.
