Canada has announced a $47 million assistance package for Pakistan during the visit of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, marking the first visit by a Canadian foreign minister to the country in nearly two decades. The funding is aimed at supporting development and security-related initiatives as Pakistan continues to face significant economic and internal challenges.

The announcement comes at a time when Pakistan is dealing with financial pressures, security concerns, and ongoing efforts to stabilise its economy.

First High-Level Visit in Nearly 20 Years

Anita Anand's visit is being seen as an important step in strengthening diplomatic engagement between Canada and Pakistan. During meetings with Pakistani leaders, both sides discussed bilateral relations, regional security, economic cooperation, and development initiatives.

As part of the visit, Canada unveiled a financial assistance package worth $47 million, which is expected to support various development and security programmes.

Pakistan Continues to Face Economic Challenges

Pakistan has been grappling with a prolonged economic crisis marked by high inflation, foreign exchange pressures, and rising public debt. India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter and has rejected third-party mediation on the issue.

Meeting with Pakistan Army Chief

During her visit, Anita Anand also met Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir in Rawalpindi. According to official statements, the meeting focused on regional security, counterterrorism, and bilateral cooperation.

Such meetings between visiting foreign dignitaries and Pakistan's military leadership are not uncommon, given the army's prominent role in the country's security and strategic affairs.
