Washington : American conservative activist and President Donald Trump's closest aide Charlie Kirk has been shot dead. He was shot during a college event in Utah on Wednesday. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but died shortly after. US President Donald Trump confirmed Charlie Kirk's death in a post on social media. Utah governor calls it a political assassination

President Trump wrote on Truth Social, 'The great and legendary Charlie Kirk has died. No one could have understood the heart of the youth of the United States better than Charlie.' Utah Governor Spencer Cox called it a black day for the state. He said, 'This is the saddest day for our country. I want to say clearly that this is a political murder.' 31-year-old Kirk was giving a speech on the campus as part of his 'American Comeback Tour' when the firing took place. Officials said that one person has been taken into custody.

Video of the incident surfaced

A video of the incident is rapidly going viral, in which Kirk is seen being shot in the neck. In the video, Kirk is seen speaking under a white tent holding a microphone in his hand. Then a shot is fired and Kirk is seen raising his right hand upwards, while a lot of blood is flowing from the left side of his neck. News agency AP has confirmed that these videos were taken at the Utah Valley University campus.


Eyewitnesses said that he bled profusely after the firing. According to officials, only one shot was fired. Just before the firing, Kirk was asking an audience question about mass shootings and gun violence. Utah Valley University said the campus was immediately evacuated and closed. Those who were on campus were asked to stay put until police officers could take them out safely.

Both Republicans and Democrats condemned the killing

Kirk's murder has stirred up American politics. Along with Trump, Democratic leaders have also strongly condemned the violence. Apart from this, Kirk's Republican colleagues have also condemned it. California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X, 'The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, disgusting and reprehensible.' Newsom hosted Kirk on his podcast last March. Former Democratic Congress member Gabrielle Giffords said, 'I am heartbroken by the murder of Charlie Kirk. My deepest condolences are with his wife, two young children and friends.'
