Important news has emerged for government employees and pensioners. Currently, all eyes are on the dearness allowance (DA) hike, which will be implemented in July. Changes are made twice a year, in January and July. These changes are based on six months of AICPI-IW (All India Consumer Index for Industrial Workers) data.

In January 2026, DA was increased by 2%. This increased the DA/DR of central government employees and pensioners from 58% to 60%. A further 3% increase is expected in the July cycle. This increase could increase the DA from 60% to 63%. However, the final decision will only be clear after an official announcement by the central government.

When will the announcement be made?

The DA hike is usually announced around Dussehra or Diwali. Since Diwali this year falls on November 8, 2026, the decision could be made by the Union Cabinet in the last week of October or early November.

Importantly, even if the announcement is delayed, the benefits of the increase can be implemented from July 1, 2026. Therefore, it is likely that employees and pensioners will receive arrears from July until the announcement. Along with the DA hike, central employees and pensioners have also turned their attention to the further recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission.
