Dalvinder Saini played Ajmal Kasab in Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar

Ranveer Singh’s much-talked-about film Dhurandhar is currently running in theatres across the country. The film features a strong ensemble cast, and casting director Mukesh Chhabra is being widely appreciated for choosing actors who leave an impact even in brief roles. One such performance comes from actor Dalvinder Saini, who portrays terrorist Ajmal Kasab in the film.

Although Dalvinder’s screen time in Dhurandhar is limited, his intense portrayal has drawn attention and brought him into the spotlight.

How Dalvinder Saini was selected for the role

In a recent Zoom interview, Dalvinder revealed that he initially received a call from MCCC, the casting agency, for an audition. After preparing the given scene, he auditioned for what he believed was a different, unnamed character.

A few days later, he was informed that he had been selected to play Ajmal Kasab. “I was happy but also shocked,” Dalvinder said. “I had auditioned for a different role altogether. When I found out I was playing Kasab, I became very nervous because this was not a fictional character.”

Preparation for a sensitive role

Dalvinder shared that he took the role very seriously and prepared extensively—both mentally and physically. He studied Kasab’s background, read about terrorism networks, and researched how extremist organisations brainwash and manipulate young people.

He also revisited detailed reports and videos related to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and their aftermath. To perfect the character, Dalvinder closely observed Kasab’s gait, body language, and mannerisms through available footage and documentaries.

Experience of working with Ranveer Singh and Arjun Rampal

Speaking about his experience on set, Dalvinder said it was an honour to work alongside Ranveer Singh and Arjun Rampal.

“Everyone on the set was extremely warm and supportive. I learned a lot by observing their passion, madness for acting, and attention to detail. Their dedication to perfecting every scene inspired me deeply,” he said.

Dalvinder also shared a personal moment, revealing that he once had a poster of Ranveer Singh on the wall of his room. “Sitting in the same space as my idol was nerve-wracking but magical. Ranveer sir was very calm and encouraging. After watching my performance, he told me, ‘Danny, you’re doing well—keep doing it like that.’ That moment means a lot to me.”
