Delhi Bomb Blast Probe: Doctor from Kanpur Under Scanner for Alleged Link with Slain Terror Suspect, NIA Expands Investigation

New Delhi, November 13: The ongoing investigation into the recent Delhi bomb blast has taken a significant turn with the arrest of a cardiologist from Kanpur. The doctor, identified as Dr. Arif, is suspected to have links with Dr. Umar, a slain terrorist allegedly involved in the explosion. Both had reportedly studied together during their MBBS years, prompting security agencies to explore whether their association extended into deeper, more sinister networks.

According to investigative sources, Dr. Arif was detained from the cardiology department in Kanpur following critical intelligence inputs derived from post-interrogation details related to Dr. Umar’s case. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) are jointly probing whether Dr. Arif was part of an underground network that may have been using the medical profession as a cover for terror-related operations.

Shared Academic Past Raises Alarms

Preliminary findings suggest that Dr. Arif and Dr. Umar’s connection dates back to their medical college years. Investigators are now examining if their association continued beyond academics and evolved into collaboration in extremist activities. Officials are also looking into possible digital communication trails, financial transactions, and social interactions between the two.

An officer involved in the case revealed that Dr. Arif’s arrest came after several inconsistencies surfaced during the interrogation of Umar’s associates, pointing toward a medical network being exploited for illicit purposes.

Suspicious Routine and Low Profile

Residents of the Ashoknagar locality in Kanpur, where Dr. Arif lived in a rented apartment near Fatima School, described him as an introverted individual with minimal social contact. According to the landlord, Arif moved in with another doctor, Abhishek, about a month ago. The pair led a quiet life, with Arif leaving home late in the morning on a two-wheeler and returning by evening.

Neighbors have described his daily routine as “highly limited and somewhat suspicious.” Police believe this reclusive lifestyle may have been an attempt to avoid detection while staying in touch with his network.

Agencies Widen Their Net

The NIA and ATS have intensified operations in Kanpur, collecting details about Kashmiri-origin students and professionals residing in the city. Reports suggest that 48 students from HBTU (Harcourt Butler Technical University) are currently under the scanner due to possible indirect links to the suspect’s communication channels.

Investigators are also examining potential connections between Dr. Arif and another physician, Dr. Shaheen, who is believed to have played a role in setting up an underground network between 2006 and 2013. During that period, Dr. Shaheen was posted at Kanpur Medical College and allegedly developed contacts across areas like Nai Sadak, Beconganj, Chaman Ganj, and Yatimkhana. It is suspected that Arif may have come in contact with this network through Shaheen.

Wider Network Under Investigation

Preliminary reports indicate that Dr. Arif’s ties with Dr. Umar were not limited to medical training. Authorities are now probing whether Arif aided in logistical, financial, or medical support for terror-linked activities. The communication records between Arif, Umar, and Shaheen have been retrieved for forensic examination.

The possibility of a larger sleeper-cell-like network operating through professionals is a key focus of the investigation. Security officials are working to trace whether more individuals from the medical community were influenced or recruited into such operations.

Authorities Maintain Tight Vigil

The NIA has refrained from making an official statement, citing the sensitivity of the case. However, insiders confirm that the agency is coordinating with intelligence units and cyber cells to map the full extent of the alleged network.

The Delhi Police, meanwhile, have urged the public not to circulate unverified information. The case continues to develop as multiple leads point toward a sophisticated nexus blending professional credibility with covert radical activities.

As the probe expands, both central and state agencies are under pressure to uncover the complete chain of command and determine whether this was an isolated case or part of a larger, organized plot behind the Delhi blast.
