Delhi: Mob Attacks North-East Shopkeeper Over Alleged Beef Sale Near DU North Campus

On Wednesday evening, a grocery shop near Delhi University’s North Campus in Vijay Nagar became the center of a violent incident after rumors spread that the shop was selling beef. A crowd quickly gathered, creating a ruckus and vandalizing the shop. During the chaos, the shopkeeper, Chaman Kumar, who hails from the North-East, was beaten up by the mob.

Police arrived at the scene, dispersed the crowd, and took the injured shopkeeper to the hospital for medical examination. A meat sample from the shop has been collected and sent for forensic testing to verify the allegations. The police are currently investigating the matter, including the assault on the shopkeeper.

The incident reportedly started when a 15-year-old boy, who had purchased meat from the shop at Rs 400 per kg, suspected it to be beef and raised an alarm. This led to the gathering of a mob and subsequent violence.

The Student Federation of India (SFI) condemned the attack, accusing the so-called ‘cow protectors’ of deliberately targeting North-East residents in Delhi and demanded police action against the perpetrators. The police, meanwhile, have stated that they are investigating the case thoroughly and will act based on the findings.
