Soon you will be able to watch live TV on your mobile without internet and WiFi. This will happen with the help of Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology. Soon means very soon. From tomorrow i.e. 1 May 2025.
Can you watch live TV on your mobile? Can you access OTT apps on your mobile? Your answer would be, what era are you living in that you ask such useless questions. Nowadays, everything from live news to sports is available on mobile in a single click. You are absolutely right. But can you do the same thing without internet and WiFi? Your answer would be, what nonsense are you talking, nothing will happen without data and WiFi. Live TV is a far cry.
No, it is very near. Soon you will be able to watch live TV on your mobile without internet and WiFi. This will happen with the help of Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology. Soon means very soon. From tomorrow i.e. 1st May 2025.
What is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M)?
What is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology, how does it work, who is making it. We will answer all such questions. But first let us know what is going to happen on 1 May 2025. Actually, World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 is going to be held on 1 May at Jio World Centre in Mumbai. In this event, companies like Lava and HMD are going to launch phones with (D2M) feature.
These will be low-cost feature phones that will have access to live TV and OTT platforms. Talking about this technology, IIT Kanpur had developed this technology in the year 2022 itself. After this, Tejas Network (Saankhya Labs) gave it the final touch in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. Last year, D2M was also started as a trial in some areas of Bengaluru, Kartavya Path and Noida.
D2M Mobiles
D2M technology works on the same technology as FM radio and direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast. Signals are emitted from the broadcasting station and reach the radio through the antenna. Just like a set-top box receives signals from the satellite and then your TV works. You must be thinking about it. For all this, an antenna will be required in the mobile.
Of course, mobile phones with (D2M) technology will have an antenna. Along with this, low-noise amplifiers, baseband filters and a receiver will also be installed. Now if the antenna is installed, it will also catch the signal. For this, the spectrum of 526MHz-582MHz will be available. The government has saved it for D2M. If you do not twist the signal much, then you can say that a mini set-top box has been fitted inside the phone.
Direct-To-Mobile
The biggest objective of (D2M) is to reduce the pressure on 5G and to deliver live TV and other content to every corner of the country. However, it is not yet known what the charges for this service will be. But the devices are being launched tomorrow. By the way, know one more thing. This technology will not be supported on your smartphone.
