Electric Car Sales Surge 44% in India; Tata Motors Retains Lead, Mahindra Records Sharpest Growth

Demand for electric passenger vehicles (EVs) in India continued its strong growth trajectory in February 2026. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric car retail sales rose 44% year-on-year to 13,733 units during the month.

However, on a month-on-month basis, sales fell 25.65% compared with 18,470 units recorded in January 2026, reflecting the usual slowdown in demand after the start-of-year surge.

Tata Motors Maintains Market Leadership

Among automakers, Tata Motors remained the leader in India’s electric passenger vehicle market.

  • The company sold 5,568 units in February 2026, up 38.51% from 4,020 units in February 2025.

  • Despite the annual growth, sales declined 30.46% from January’s 8,007 units due to seasonal demand moderation.

MG Motor Holds Second Spot

MG Motor India, backed by the JSW Group, ranked second in the EV passenger vehicle segment.

  • The company recorded 3,312 units in February 2026.

  • Sales were 5.10% lower year-on-year and 29.58% down compared with January.

Mahindra Records Fastest Growth

The most significant growth among major automakers was reported by Mahindra & Mahindra.

  • The company sold 2,913 electric cars in February 2026, compared with 508 units in February 2025.

  • This represents an impressive 473.43% year-on-year jump.

  • Month-on-month sales declined 20.58% from 3,668 units in January.

Other Automakers in the EV Market

Several other companies also contributed to the growing electric vehicle market in India:

  • Vietnamese automaker VinFast sold 384 units in February.

  • China’s BYD delivered 306 vehicles, recording 10.07% annual growth and 32.47% monthly growth.

  • Hyundai Motor India sold 304 electric cars, down 60.77% from 775 units last year.

  • Kia India registered strong improvement with 295 units, compared to just 22 units in February 2025.

Luxury EV Segment Performance

In the premium electric vehicle category:

  • BMW sold 245 units.

  • Mercedes‑Benz India sold 65 units.

  • Maruti Suzuki sold 214 EVs.

  • Tesla recorded 29 units, while Volvo Cars sold 25 units.

EV Growth Across Segments

FADA noted that electric vehicle sales increased across all segments on a yearly basis in February 2026. Nevertheless, the overall EV share in the automobile market has not expanded significantly, as sales of conventional petrol and diesel vehicles continue to grow rapidly.

The month-on-month decline in EV sales was mainly attributed to February being a shorter month and the unusually high sales recorded in January, dealers said.

Outlook: Despite short-term fluctuations, the strong annual growth signals increasing consumer interest in electric mobility, supported by expanding charging infrastructure, new product launches and government incentives.
