After the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent rise in tensions between India and Pakistan, tourism and public movement in Kashmir took a hit. Now, the first large-scale event post-attack is taking place—the Kheer Bhawani fair in Ganderbal, Kashmir, with heightened security measures.
Devotees Arrive in Convoy of 60 Buses
On Sunday morning, hundreds of devotees, mostly Kashmiri Pandits, arrived in the valley in a convoy of 60 buses to participate in the fair, the most significant religious gathering for their community. Despite the strict security and well-organized arrangements for lodging and food, officials note that the crowd this year is smaller compared to previous years, likely due to fears following the Pahalgam attack and recent India-Pakistan tensions.
Security Review by Top Officials
Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Nalin Prabhat, along with senior police officers from Ganderbal district, personally inspected the preparations at the Mata Kheer Bhawani temple. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Kheer Bhawani—considered the Kul Devi of Kashmiri Hindus—is a spiritual focal point, attracting devotees annually on Jyeshtha Ashtami.
Faith Over Fear: Devotees Speak Out
Many pilgrims shared their resolve and faith despite the difficult security environment. Devotee Rakesh Kaul said, “Our connection with Mata Kheer Bhawani is centuries old. Even after 36 years of fear, people continue to come here. Our faith is stronger than fear.” Another devotee, Rajesh Jyots, called it a sacred duty to visit the Kul Devi and urged others not to be scared. First-time visitor Saroj echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that attacks are meant to spread fear but should not stop anyone from visiting the holy site.
Smooth Arrangements for Pilgrims
Relief Commissioner Arvind Karwani, Jammu Deputy Commissioner Sachin Kumar Vaish, and senior police officials flagged off the convoy from Nagrota. Officials assured that all arrangements for pilgrims’ safety, accommodation, and meals in the valley are in place. Security measures remain stringent to ensure a peaceful and safe fair.
