Do you keep yawning frequently throughout the day? Has drinking several cups of coffee by afternoon become a part of your routine? If yes, then this may not be normal fatigue but may be a sign of a serious health problem. According to a new position paper from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), frequent yawning can be a sign of sleep deprivation and a possible sleep disorder.

This condition is more commonly seen in people who do not get enough and good sleep. AASM President Dr. Eric Olson says that lack of sleep is a serious health concern, due to which accidents and health problems are increasing in society every day.

What is the reason for frequent yawning?

 Lack of sleep

Sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea or narcolepsy

 Stress and depression

 Side effects of medicines

Irregular lifestyle and late night screen use

What are the risks?

 Mental exhaustion and problems concentrating

Increased risk of accidents while driving

 Making mistakes at work

 Depression and suicidal thoughts

Changes in social behaviour, such as irritability and anxiety

How to avoid this problem?

* Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day

Keep a regular bedtime and wake-up time

 Reduce screen time before bedtime

 Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption

Consult a sleep expert if needed

According to doctors, frequent yawning is not just fatigue, it is a warning from the body that it is not getting enough rest. Ignoring it can lead to a major disease in the future. So give priority to sleep and be aware for a healthy life.
