Gautam Gambhir’s Future as India Test Coach: BCCI Issues Clarification Amid Speculations

Since Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach of the Indian Test team, the side’s performance has not met expectations. India suffered defeats against New Zealand and South Africa at home and also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Following these results, questions about Gambhir’s coaching tenure surfaced, along with rumors that VVS Laxman might be appointed as the next Test coach. The BCCI has now addressed these speculations.

BCCI Denies Speculation About VVS Laxman

BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia clarified that reports suggesting the board is planning to replace Gambhir with VVS Laxman are completely false. Speaking to ANI, Saikia said, “Media reports are purely speculative and have no basis in reality. The BCCI has not taken any decision in this regard, and we completely reject these rumors.”

Saikia also referred to earlier reports claiming that the board had approached Laxman to take charge of the Test team, reiterating that these reports are entirely incorrect and have no factual backing.

India’s Test Performance Under Gambhir

Since being appointed in July 2024, Gambhir has overseen 19 Test matches. Out of these, India has won only 7, including two against Bangladesh at home, one against Australia abroad, two against England abroad, and two against West Indies at home. On the other hand, India lost all three home Tests against New Zealand and also faced defeats in overseas series against Australia and England, along with failing to beat South Africa in a home Test.

Gautam Gambhir is now the only Indian Test head coach under whose tenure the team has lost five Test matches at home — a rare and concerning statistic for the board and fans alike.

Current Status

Despite the poor run of results, the BCCI has made it clear that no decision regarding Gambhir’s removal has been made. For now, he remains the head coach, and the board has denied any immediate changes in leadership.

India’s cricketing fraternity will be closely watching upcoming series to see if the team can bounce back and stabilize under Gambhir’s guidance.
