A rather unusual workplace story has gone viral, highlighting a refreshing take on empathy and mental health at work. A Gen Z employee from the company “Not Dating” wrote to her boss, asking for 12 days of leave following a breakup. What caught everyone’s attention wasn’t just the reason for the leave, but the boss’s thoughtful response that quickly made headlines across social media.
The employee’s email was straightforward and honest — she mentioned she had recently gone through a breakup and was finding it hard to concentrate on her work. She requested leave from the 28th to the 8th, adding that she was still working from home that day. Jasvir Singh, the company’s CEO and co-founder, shared the email on his X (formerly Twitter) account, calling it “the most honest leave application” he had ever received. He captioned the post, “Gen Z doesn’t hide anything,” which immediately struck a chord with online users.
When asked whether he granted the leave, Jasvir Singh confirmed that he approved it without hesitation. He explained that the younger generation today values mental health and emotional recovery as much as professional commitments — and employers should recognize that.
The internet flooded with reactions. One user praised him, saying, “A boss who understands an employee’s heart is a true leader.” Another humorously remarked, “People don’t even get this many days off for their wedding!” To which the CEO jokingly replied, “A breakup needs more time off than a wedding.”
