Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20 series against New Zealand due to a fractured wrist sustained during net practice. The injury occurred when Mitchell Owen hit a powerful straight drive that struck Maxwell’s hand as he was bowling in the nets at Mount Maunganui. Scans confirmed the fracture, leading to Maxwell’s exclusion from the New Zealand tour. Josh Philippe has been called up as his replacement.
Maxwell, 36, has faced multiple injuries in recent years, including a broken leg in 2022 and a concussion during the 2023 ODI World Cup. This injury is a further setback ahead of the five-match T20 series against India, scheduled to start on October 29, where his participation now appears doubtful due to limited recovery time.
Matthew Short, an Australian all-rounder who witnessed the incident, described the moment, stating the shot hit Maxwell hard and the sound indicated a serious injury. Despite the disappointment, Short expressed confidence in Maxwell’s recovery, acknowledging his history of overcoming injuries.
Australia faces multiple challenges ahead of key international fixtures, with key players like Josh Inglis, Pat Cummins, and Cameron Green also unavailable for the New Zealand and India T20I series due to injury or other commitments.
Maxwell’s absence leaves a hole in Australia’s lineup, both with the bat and as a part-time bowler. Meanwhile, Josh Philippe, who impressed during Australia A’s recent India tour, steps in to strengthen the squad. The Australian team hopes to regroup and build momentum heading towards the 2026 T20 World Cup on home soil
