Google is making it easier for Android users to access its Gemini AI assistant while reading or working inside different apps. The company is rolling out an update that adds an “Ask Gemini” option directly to the text-selection menu, reducing the number of steps needed to ask the AI about something displayed on the screen.

Gemini will appear when you select text

Earlier, Android users generally had to select text and use the Share menu or open Gemini separately to get help with the selected content. With the new integration, users can select text and directly choose Ask Gemini from the system-level text-selection menu.

This can be useful when reading an article, checking an email, studying a document or working inside another supported app. Instead of copying the text, opening Gemini and pasting it manually, users can access the AI assistant much more quickly.

What can you use it for?

The shortcut can make several everyday tasks faster. For example, users can select an unfamiliar word and ask Gemini to explain it, highlight a paragraph for a summary, or select information they don't understand and ask for a simpler explanation.

It could also be useful for students and professionals who frequently work with large amounts of text. Rather than switching between applications, the AI assistant can be brought into the workflow more directly.

There is still another way to open Gemini

Google hasn't removed the existing methods of accessing Gemini. Android users can still invoke the assistant by holding the physical power button on supported devices.

The new text-selection shortcut is essentially another access point designed to make Gemini feel more integrated with Android rather than functioning as a completely separate application.

Google is pushing AI deeper into Android

The move is part of Google's broader strategy of making AI available throughout its software ecosystem. Gemini is increasingly being integrated into Android and other Google services, allowing users to access AI assistance without constantly opening a dedicated chatbot.

For everyday users, the biggest advantage is convenience. A task that previously required copying text, switching applications and pasting it into an AI tool can now potentially be completed with just a few taps.
